Chin Augmentation (Mentoplasty, Chin Implant) Fort Worth, TX

What to Expect During And After Surgery

Chin Augmentation is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery can take as little as an hour to complete, though every procedure is unique and more time may be required to achieve ideal results. The recovery period from Chin Augmentation takes about 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, you will see a continuous gradual improvement in swelling, discomfort, and numbness of the chin and lower lip. By the second month following surgery, most patients feel that they have a stronger and more symmetric profile because of the augmentation.

Surgical Technique

The most common approach for Chin Augmentation, also called Mentopasty, is an incision in the skin under the chin. Through this incision the silicone implant is passed, then placed directly over the lower jaw bone. Depending on a patient’s natural structure, the surgeon may construct a pocket to hold the implant. Some shaving of the jaw bone may be required in order to create the most appropriate structure to anchor the implant. The implant is then sutured directly to the chin bone. Sometimes a second incision will be made inside the mouth to ensure complete attachment. Following surgery, medical tape or a compression dressing is applied to help protect the implant during the recovery period.

Chin Augmentation FAQs

Can It Help a Double Chin?
Patients who have excess fat within the cheeks and neck creating a “double chin” may want to first consider a liposuction procedure. Removing this fat may be all that is needed to reveal a more defined chin. If liposuction does not produce the desired effect, Dr. Daniels can consult on the best chin implant to achieve an even sharper jaw line.

Will Sensation Return?
Once your physical appearance has reached its desired result, you will likely still have decreased sensation in facial regions. As your body adjusts to having a new structure within it, the tissues must also adjust. It is completely normal to experience numbness and other sensation differences for a full year after surgery. But these will subside and normal sensitivity will return.

Are There Visible Scars?
Because the incision for Chin Augmentation is made underneath the chin or inside the mouth, scarring is both minimal and hidden. Scars are virtually unnoticeable in everyday situations.
What About Genioplasty?
For more complex facial issues, some patients opt for Genioplasty paired with Chin Augmentation. Considered a reconstructive procedure, Genioplasty surgically repositions and reshapes it. Genioplasty can also be paired with neck liposuction for optimal effect. An in-depth consultation with your plastic surgeon is required to decide which procedure or combination of procedures is best for you.
