Breast Lift Fort Worth

What To Expect During And After Surgery

Breast lift surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes between 1-2 hours to complete. Recovery times vary based on the complexity of the procedure performed and whether it occurred in conjunction with another body contouring procedure or not. Most patients are able to resume their normal work schedule after a few days of rest. A return to exercise takes longer; patients should allow 6-8 weeks of recovery before engaging in full exercise, including running and weight training.

Surgical Techniques

The type of incision used during a breast lift procedure is dependent upon the extent of lift and whether implants are to be placed. If implants are included, they are placed under the pectoralis muscle. This is true regardless of whether silicone or saline implants are used. This method of placement ensures additional support of the implant and helps to keep the breasts in a higher position for a longer period of time. In cases of exceptionally large implants, a supportive tissue matrix can be used in a sling-type fashion to secure the implants in place.

Incision Types

Incision TypesThe number and placement of incisions necessary will be determined by the degree of lift needed. After the incisions are created, excess skin and tissue is removed and the nipple and areola are repositioned for the most natural-appearing placement. Sutures are placed deep in the breast wall to securely hold up the breast. Multiple incision placements can be considered in a breast lift:

  • Around the curvature of the areola (the tissue immediately surrounding the nipple)
  • Vertically on the bottom of the areola, tracing down to the crease under the breast
  • Horizontally beneath the breast following the natural crease

Many things can contribute to less-than-ideal breast appearance: significant weight changes, nursing children, and the natural aging process. These all can affect skin laxity and breast structure, causing the breasts to sag while losing volume and shape. While diet and exercise will help somewhat with weight and surrounding muscle tone, it will not have any effect on sagging skin. A breast lift procedure at Anderson Plastic Surgery is the answer to this problem for many Fort Worth and North Texas area patients. A breast lift can also enhance proportion and balance by reducing the size of the areola surrounding the nipple. A breast lift is not an augmentation, so breasts will not be larger after surgery; If larger breasts are desired, breast lift plastic surgery can be combined with breast augmentation. Or, for women with uncomfortably large breasts who are considering breast reduction plastic surgery with Dr. Daniels, a breast lift could improve their new profile. At Anderson Plastic Surgery, we strive for a natural-looking result when performing breast lift surgery.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) FAQs

Breast Lift or Implants?
When deciding between breast augmentation alone, or augmentation paired with a breast lift, consideration must be given to the presence of existing breast sagging. Implants alone may help initially with sagging, but the additional weight causes the breasts to sag further. Some women find a breast lift is the only procedure they need to obtain the desired fullness and do not need implants at all. During consultation, the surgeon will discuss whether a breast lift, breast augmentation, or combination of both would attain the best results.

Nipple/Areola Placement
Since the goal of breast lift is more perfect proportion, the procedure includes relocation and resizing of the nipple and areolar complex. The areola will be reduced in size appropriately, and then both nipple and areola will be placed in a location on the breast that is natural and balanced with the new breast size and shape.
What About Scarring?
A breast lift is a major surgery, so scarring is inevitable. To complete the procedure effectively and safely, incisions of a certain size must be made. But great care is taken to minimize scarring as much as possible through strategic incision placement, and most patients agree that the physical results following a breast lift procedure are worth the scars that remain. A portion of the pre-procedure consultation covers detailed post-operative scar care instructions.
Breast Reduction?
To achieve the most perfect size and shape, breast reduction surgery may be combined with a breast lift. This entails removing more breast tissue and excess skin before lifting the breast to the ideal position. More information on this procedure can be found on the breast reduction page.
